Former MEP Frances Fitzgerald announced her decision not to contest for the Presidential election despite interest from supporters and discussions with Fine Gael leadership. Citing multiple reasons, she emphasized assessing the political landscape and timing for her personally. Fitzgerald will support the eventual candidate from the Fine Gael convention. Current frontrunner Mairead McGuinness has polled at 27%, while Fitzgerald received only 3%. The upcoming election is set for late 2023, with candidates needing to be nominated soon.
I'm very flattered and really want to thank the people over a long period who have suggested it to me but I have decided I won't be contesting.
The reasons behind my decision are multifactorial, including assessing the current political landscape and whether it was the right time for me personally and for the campaign.
I will be supporting whoever emerges from the Fine Gael convention, as the party has never had a successful Presidential candidate.
According to the latest poll, Mairead McGuinness emerged as the frontrunner in the race with 27%, followed by Senator Michael McDowell at 16%.
