Former MEP and political figure Simon Harris has announced she will not pursue a bid for presidency despite receiving considerable encouragement. She reflected on the numerous variables influencing her decision, including the political context and personal timing. Harris emphasized her intention to back the eventual Fine Gael candidate, amidst a party historically struggling for presidential success. The current favorites include Mairead McGuinness and other prominent politicians with varying polling results in the lead-up to the election.
I'm very flattered and really want to thank the people over a long period who have suggested it to me but I have decided I won't be contesting.
The reasons behind my decision are multifactorial and include assessing the current political landscape, whether it was the right time for me personally and the campaign.
I will be supporting whoever emerges from the Fine Gael convention.
The party has never had a successful Presidential candidate; the current frontrunners include Mairead McGuinness, who polled 27 percent.
