"Initial projections showed George Simion leading Romania's presidential vote, threatening a shift from pro-western policies to ultranationalist sentiments within EU and NATO."
"A far-right victory could see Romania, an EU and NATO member, moving away from its pro-western stance, posing challenges within the European bloc."
George Simion, an ultranationalist candidate from the far-right AUR party, achieved a significant lead in the first round of Romania's rerun presidential vote, garnering between 30% and 33%. He will face off against centrist candidates Nicusor Dan and Crin Antonescu in a run-off on May 18. The election comes after the original ballot was canceled following concerns of Russian influence. A victory for Simion could disrupt Romania's pro-EU stance and align the country more closely with nationalist movements in Europe and the U.S.
