Nicusor Dan, the centrist Mayor of Bucharest, appears poised to win a presidential runoff against ultranationalist George Simion, according to exit polls. Dan's victory, with over 54% of the vote, comes after a tumultuous political period in Romania. Nearly 11.6 million citizens participated in the election, marking a record turnout. Despite Dan's apparent success, Simion claimed victory and rejected the exit poll results, stating he would also represent all Romanians. Dan emphasized the need for justice reform and combating corruption in his victory speech.
There is a community that lost today's elections. A community that is outraged by the way politics has been done so far, so outraged that it believes that the only solution is a revolution, said Dan shortly after the exit polls were published.
I will be the president of all Romanians, so I will also be your president, Simion said in a speech claiming he won. I thank the millions of people who made a victory possible.
