Ken Paxton was projected the winner of a U.S. Senate primary runoff in Texas shortly after polls closed, taking more than 60% of the vote while John Cornyn received about 37%. Cornyn, first elected to the Senate in 2002, faced trouble after President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton and criticized Cornyn as disloyal to the MAGA movement. CNN’s John King said Trump’s national approval is weakening on affordability and the Iran war, yet the Paxton-Cornyn race demonstrated Trump’s power within the Republican base. King also cited Trump’s recent endorsement of Paxton’s primary opponent against Rep. Thomas Massie, leading to Massie’s loss and exit from office.
