Ecuador votes in razor-thin second-round elections DW 04/13/2025
Briefly

Ecuador's highly anticipated second round presidential election pits incumbent Daniel Noboa against leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez. Noboa, who has been president for just over 16 months after beating Gonzalez in a previous election, aims to ensure economic growth while facing concerns of election integrity. With more than 13 million eligible voters, voting is mandatory for those under 65, and each candidate has deployed numerous observers to monitor the process amid fears of fraud. Noboa's proposed policies include tax increases alongside austerity measures, while Gonzalez aims at promoting more progressive governance.
Noboa has predicted 4% economic growth in 2025 if his policies, which include an increase in tax and some austerity measures, are to continue.
More than 13 million people are eligible to vote, which is mandatory for adults up to the age of 65. Failure to vote results in a $46 fine.
Both candidates, and Gonzalez's mentor, former President Rafael Correa, have urged their observers to be vigilant, with each having more than 45,000 polling place observers.
Noboa, 37, is heir to a multibillion-dollar banana fortune, while Gonzalez, 47, of the Citizens' Revolution party, is a lawyer and a former lawmaker.
