Conclave: Cardinals elect new pope DW 05/08/2025
Briefly

After the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, an assembly of 133 Catholic cardinals has gathered in the Sistine Chapel to elect his successor. Initial voting resulted in no consensus, as they require a two-thirds majority, or 89 votes. The conclave process, marked by sacred tradition and the presence of Michelangelo's Last Judgement, has seen black smoke from the chimney indicating no election yet. Hope remains amongst the faithful for a decision possibly by the day's end, as articulated by senior Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
White smoke has emerged from a chimney in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. The smoke signifies that a new pope has been elected to lead the Catholic Church.
Despite the disappointment after black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney earlier in the morning, many in St. Peter's Square hope a new pontiff could be chosen soon...
I hope by this evening, returning to Rome, I'll find white smoke, said Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who presided over the Mass before the conclave but is not taking part in the balloting.
