The image surfaced shortly after Trump joked about wanting to be pope, also indicating that he sees Dolan as a potential candidate. Dolan made these comments following a Mass in Rome, where he prepared for the upcoming conclave of cardinals responsible for selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church after the death of Pope Francis. Prominent Catholics have also spoken out against Trump sharing the image.
I hope [Trump] didn't have anything to do with that, Dolan said of the AI image, speaking after a Mass in Rome. Well, you know, it wasn't good.
He quipped, I'd like to be pope. That would be my No. 1 choice before clarifying that he doesn't actually have a top choice.
Dolan is a member of the president's Religious Liberty Commission and has observed that Trump 'takes his Christian faith seriously.'
Other prominent Catholics have ripped into Trump for sharing the AI-powered image of him as the pope.
