From September next year, more than half a million additional pupils in England will become eligible for free school meals if they come from families receiving universal credit above the current 7,400 income cap, adding to an existing 2.1 million beneficiaries and an estimated 100,000 children lifted from poverty by 2028. A pledge to provide free breakfast clubs for primary pupils is under way with offers from Weetabix, Morrisons and Sainsbury's for early adopter schools. An £8m pilot in 20 council areas will trial moving homeless families from temporary B&B accommodation into permanent homes within six weeks, alongside a new duty for councils to inform schools, GPs and health visitors when a child is placed in temporary accommodation.
