Ukraine allies pledge to take Russian oil and gas off global market
"take Russian oil and gas off the global market"
"We're choking off funding for Russia's war machine,"
"such weapons are used to strike Russian Federation territory the response will be... overwhelming"
"unlock billions to help finance Ukraine's defence"
More than 20 nations pledged to take Russian oil and gas off the global market to pressure President Vladimir Putin to end the war. The UK and US sanctioned Russia's two biggest oil companies while the EU targeted Moscow's liquefied natural gas exports. No long-range missile deliveries to Ukraine were announced despite requests for US Tomahawks and European missiles. US President Donald Trump indicated he was not ready to supply Tomahawks. President Putin warned that use of such weapons against Russian territory would prompt an overwhelming response. Allies agreed a clear plan for the rest of the year and discussed targeting sovereign Russian assets to unlock funds for Ukraine's defence. EU leaders agreed to support Ukraine's financial needs for two years but did not agree to use frozen Russian assets worth 140bn.
