"Swindon is a political bellwether, and what we're seeing here is happening across the country."
"They're turning to the Greens because we're the only party offering real hope, real courage, and real solutions for the future."
"When we have been elected on our values and beliefs in a just and equal world, it's important that we can represent that authentically through a party which best aligns with those values."
Two Labour councillors in Swindon, Tom Butcher and Repi Begum, have defected to the Green Party and will sit as Greens until May 2026. Councillor Ian Edwards made the same move last week, bringing the Green group to three councillors and making it the third-largest group on Swindon Borough Council. Labour still holds 35 councillors and a majority of 13, while the Conservatives have 16 councillors, plus two Independents and one Liberal Democrat. Swindon Labour called the defections hugely disappointing and urged by-elections, while Green leader Zack Polanski framed the moves as part of a wider national shift toward Green policies.
