Lord Taverne has died aged 97, leaving a long career in British politics and public policy. He served as Labour MP for Lincoln from 1962 to 1974 and was chief secretary to the Treasury during preparations for decimal currency. He resigned from the Labour Party over pro‑European views, won the 1973 Lincoln by‑election as a Democratic Labour candidate and lost the seat in 1974. He became a founder of the Liberal Democrats after the SDP–Liberal merger in 1988. He was the first director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 1970, was appointed to the House of Lords in 1996, and is survived by his wife Janice and daughters Suzanna and Caroline.
