"I won't shy away from asking the awkward questions, I promise you that.""
"The 16 member public accounts committee, which is widely seen as one of the most powerful at Westminister, has a Labour majority but is chaired by Conservative MP Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown. The BBC understands Lowe will take the place of Biggin Hill MP Peter Fortune, one of the two other Conservatives on the committee, so Fortune can focus on supporting the shadow science and technology team and his constituents."
Conservatives will give ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe one of their three seats on the influential Public Accounts Committee, citing shared values on cutting waste. Lowe was elected in 2024 as a Reform UK MP and was expelled in March after a major falling out with party leadership. Lowe will use the role to scrutinise senior figures across the public sector and to emphasise careful treatment of taxpayers' money. The 16-member committee has a Labour majority but is chaired by Conservative Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown. Lowe will replace Biggin Hill MP Peter Fortune so Fortune can focus on shadow science and technology responsibilities and constituency work. Conservatives have previously offered committee seats to MPs from other affiliations, including Rosie Duffield.
