The Guardian view on Reform election victories: a barometer of disillusionment | Editorial
Briefly

The recent byelection results indicate a significant shift in political dynamics in the UK, with Labour losing Runcorn and Helsby to Reform UK despite a strong previous performance. The rise of Reform, helmed by Mr. Farage, is notable as the party seeks nationwide influence, competing aggressively across multiple seats. Reform's recent successes include controlling local councils and winning the Greater Lincolnshire mayoralty. However, the article cautions that while the party's visibility is increasing, its policy depth and candidate quality remain questionable, which could impact its sustainability in the longer term.
Last July, Labour won Runcorn and Helsby with a majority of 14,696 and more than 50% of the vote. This week it was lost to Reform UK.
The surge is real. Parties led by Mr Farage have done well before, but now he is bidding for nationwide power with Reform.
For the first time, Reform fielded candidates in every seat being contested and took control of local authorities and the new mayoralty of Greater Lincolnshire.
It would be complacent to imagine that Mr Farage's support has now peaked, as he claims to have supplanted the Conservatives as the main party of opposition.
