After Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU, the simultaneous UK leave vote jeopardized the territory's economic relationship with Spain. Since then, there have been attempts to resolve critical issues, but progress has been slow. In a recent agreement, dual passport checks for travelers will be implemented, reducing border friction. This will allow Gibraltar to operate more like part of the Schengen area, supporting its economy and facilitating movement for workers, while British sovereignty over the territory remains intact.
This week, however, a much better deal was finally sorted. Though the detailed text has yet to be published, it appears to offer the kind of frictionless border crossing on which Gibraltar and the surrounding area depend.
The core of Wednesday's agreement is for dual passport checks - British and Spanish - on travellers arriving at Gibraltar airport. These will be similar to the British-French checks.
