Swinney says 'precedent is on my side' to secure indyref2
""Precedent is on my side. "This is what happened in 2011. "And precedent is a substantial factor in legal consideration of the right of the people of Scotland to decide their own future.""
""I would say to people worried about their standard of living, this election should be about independence. "Because, under the United Kingdom, people's standard of living has been flat as a pancake for 15 years.""
"The first minister said Scotland had to consider if was going to accept "more of this" as well as what he described as a "shift to the right" in UK politics. He said the SNP was bringing down NHS waiting lists and building more affordable homes."
John Swinney says the precedent from the SNP winning a majority of MSPs in 2011 should trigger a new independence poll if the party again secures a majority at the next Holyrood election. Delegates endorsed a strategy to make the election a de-facto referendum, but the UK Labour government and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer do not support a second referendum. Swinney called the prime minister's position "fatuous" and argued precedent is a substantial legal factor. He linked independence to improving living standards and cited NHS waiting-list reductions and affordable housing efforts.
