Starting gun fired on crucial election as Wales' parliament returns
"Reform define the anger and Plaid define the hope"
"That is a very accurate summary, is it not, of the current state of play"
"I'm proud to lead a party offering hope when others seek to stoke anger and sow division"
"I'm interested in hope. I'm not interested in fantasy, which is what we get from Plaid Cymru."
Leaders of Welsh Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Welsh Conservatives clashed in the Senedd as the 2026 election campaign opened. Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth positioned his party as offering hope and noted polls suggesting Plaid is vying with Reform for first place in May. Labour First Minister Eluned Morgan accused Plaid of promoting fantasy and cited a significant announcement of a £2 cap on bus fares. Conservative Darren Millar urged the abolition of stamp duty in Wales. Ap Iorwerth said Plaid’s manifesto will outline using government time to seek more levers of power, a route he described as leading toward independence.
