Morgan McSweeney, chief of staff to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has the highest salary among special advisers, earning between £155,000 and £159,999. Nine other senior staff members are in the next pay band, receiving between £145,000 and £149,999. The overall pay bill for special advisers in 2024/25 is reported at 16.7 million, which includes 3.1 million for severance costs from the previous government. On 31 March, 130 special advisers were working for the government, with salaries disclosed in £5,000 bands.
