Starmer under pressure after Mandelson sacking as MPs hold emergency debate: Live
"A Survation survey carried out for LabourList put Powell, the former leader of the Commons, in a clear lead ahead of education secretary Bridget Phillipson. The survey of 1,112 people found Powell 15 points ahead of Phillipson with the support of 47 per cent of Labour members to the education secretary's 30 per cent. Of the 23 per cent that are undecided, nearly two thirds are leaning towards Powell."
"While Phillipson is seen as an establishment figure, supporters believe Powell, fired by Sir Keir just two weeks ago, could be a more vocal critic of the current premiership. The new deputy leader will be announced by the party on 25 October. They will replace Ms Rayner, who resigned after failing to pay the appropriate rate of stamp duty on a property in Hove."
Lucy Powell is the favourite to replace Angela Rayner as deputy leader of the Labour Party according to a Survation poll for LabourList. Powell leads education secretary Bridget Phillipson by 15 points, securing 47 per cent support to Phillipson's 30 per cent among 1,112 surveyed Labour members. Around 23 per cent remain undecided, and nearly two thirds of those undecided are leaning towards Powell. Powell was recently sacked by Sir Keir Starmer and is viewed by supporters as potentially more vocal on the premiership. The new deputy leader will be announced on 25 October and will replace Rayner following her resignation over unpaid stamp duty.
