A petition titled "Call an immediate general election" on the parliamentary website has surpassed one million signatures since being set up six months ago. The House of Commons Petitions Committee confirmed a Westminster Hall debate for 12 January, to be led by Tory MP John Lamont with a government MP responding. A previous petition by Michael Westwood gained over three million signatures and prompted a government response noting its July 2024 mandate and that a Prime Minister can request dissolution from the Sovereign. The government announced cancellation of May local elections in several counties, drawing criticism from Reform UK figures.
