Siddiq given second Bangladesh jail sentence as Labour criticises process
"Tulip Siddiq has not had access to a fair legal process in this case and has never been informed of the details of the charges against her."
"Anyone facing any charge should always be afforded the right to make legal representations when allegations are made against them."
"Given that has not happened in this case, we cannot recognise this judgment."
"I'm absolutely baffled by the whole thing - I've still had no contact whatsoever from the Bangladeshi authorities despite them spreading malicious allegations about me for a year-and-a-half now."
Tulip Siddiq, a former UK Treasury minister and Labour MP, was sentenced in absentia by a Bangladeshi court to four years in prison on corruption charges. The court also sentenced her aunt, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and two other family members to prison terms in separate corruption cases. The defendants denied the charges. The Labour Party said Siddiq did not receive a fair legal process, was never informed of details of the charges despite repeated legal requests, and therefore cannot recognise the judgment. Siddiq had previously received a two-year sentence linked to alleged influence over a land allocation and resigned from ministerial office in January 2025 amid related questions.
