Recent findings by the Institute for Fiscal Studies reveal that public sector employees in Scotland have experienced pay rises of 5% above inflation since 2019, in contrast to stagnant wages for their counterparts in other UK regions. The expansion of the Scottish public sector, with an added 56,000 employees since 2017, has elevated the annual wage bill to £27 billion. While teachers and nurses in Scotland earn substantially more than those in England, experts express concerns that these financial boosts have not necessarily improved staff retention or productivity, presenting a fiscal challenge for the Scottish Government.
Scotland has not only increased the number of public sector workers more quickly than other parts of the UK, it has also increased their pay more quickly.
Higher rates of pay have become frankly unaffordable, with taxpayers seeing no real improvement in the value or quality of services.
