"This May, I think you will see, because we did so well four years ago, when I think we won 60 per cent of council seats, you will see Labour losing some seats. My experience when Labour is in Government and there are all-out elections in London is that we do badly, not withstanding the brilliant Labour councillors that we have."
"Labour currently dominates the capital's town halls, with 21 of the 33 boroughs under the party's control. But the May elections are expected to lead to one of the greatest political shake-ups in London since the 1960s due to the rise of Nigel Farage's Reform UK party and the relative unpopularity of Labour and the Conservatives. The three former Tory boroughs that were won by Labour in 2022 Westminster, Wandsworth and Barnet are all at risk, as are strongholds such as Newham and Hackney."
"More than 1,100 of the 1,940 councillors in London are Labour. There are about 375 Tory councillors, 180 Lib-Dems and 30 Greens. Reform has less than a dozen councillors in London, including two in Westminster and two in Bromley, though the number is rising due to defections. Last week, Reform's deputy leader Richard Tice said it was going to win councils in London in May."
Labour holds 21 of London’s 33 boroughs and more than 1,100 of the 1,940 councillors in the capital. The May local elections could produce a major shake-up because of Reform UK’s rise and the relative unpopularity of both Labour and the Conservatives. Vulnerable boroughs include Westminster, Wandsworth and Barnet, alongside traditional Labour strongholds such as Newham and Hackney. Conservatives currently run six boroughs and the Lib-Dems three. Tower Hamlets is led by Aspire. The City of London Corporation and Havering have no overall control. Reform’s councillor numbers remain small but are increasing through defections.
