""working people""
""coming back with more borrowing or more taxes""
""that now looks like a lie as she is gearing up to impose more punishing tax hikes""
""If she puts up tax, give Reeves the axe.""
Kemi Badenoch called on the prime minister to sack Chancellor Rachel Reeves if Reeves raises taxes in the upcoming Budget. Labour pledged not to raise taxes on "working people", covering National Insurance, income tax rates and VAT, but Sir Keir Starmer did not repeat that promise. The chancellor is widely expected to raise taxes after gloomy economic forecasts and welfare-u-turns made meeting fiscal rules harder. Conservatives say Labour already announced £40bn of tax rises last year, including an employer National Insurance hike. Conservatives propose £47bn of annual savings after 2029 from welfare, civil service cuts, overseas aid and asylum changes to fund growth and other pledges.
