Romanian prime minister resigns as Simion eyes presidency DW 05/05/2025
Briefly

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has announced his resignation following poor electoral results for his coalition government in the presidential elections. The candidate from his coalition received only 20.3% of the vote, while hard-right leader George Simion secured 40.5%. Ciolacu expressed the need to leave the governing coalition, indicating a loss of legitimacy for the current government. The elections marked a continuation of political instability as the two frontrunners prepare for a runoff on May 18, setting the stage for significant shifts in Romanian governance.
"I have proposed to my colleagues to leave the governing coalition, which implicitly leads to my resignation as prime minister... We saw how Romanians voted yesterday which means that the ruling coalition has no legitimacy, at least in this formula," he told reporters after a meeting of his Social Democrats party.
Hard-right populist leader George Simion won the most votes, 40.5%, in the first round of the presidential election, ... He will face off against pro-EU Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan in the May 18 runoff who received a 20.9% share of the vote.
