"Crowborough training camp received 27 men in the early hours of Thursday morning, a statement said, which will be scaled up to 500 over several months. It is one of two military camps identified by ministers to house 900 people the other being in Inverness. Using language that reflects the home secretary's hardline stance on housing asylum seekers, Shabana Mahmood said the move was part of a plan to move claimants out of hotels and into large scale accommodation."
"Illegal migration has been placing immense pressure on communities. That is why we are removing the incentives that draw illegal migrants to Britain, closing asylum hotels that are blighting communities. Crowborough is just the start. I will bring forward site after site until every asylum hotel is closed and returned to local communities, she said. The latest Home Office figures show the number of asylum seekers being temporarily housed in hotels increased by 13% to 36,273 at the end of September."
A first group of 27 men was moved into Crowborough training camp in East Sussex, with capacity planned to increase to 500 over several months. The site is one of two military camps designated to house 900 people, the other in Inverness. Officials delayed transfer until January to ensure safety and to avoid issues such as legionella. New arrivals are expected to be recent Channel arrivals and will undergo health and police checks before arrival. The base will have 24/7 security, CCTV and strict sign-in processes. Crowborough has seen regular weekend protests against the plans.
