The Curia of Hungary has overturned a police ban on the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party (MKKP) from hosting an event in Budapest. The event featured discussions on drug policies, emphasizing the disproportionate criminalization of marijuana usage compared to more harmful substances. MKKP argues that the police's ban was premature, as it preceded a recent amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law aimed at tightening drug regulations. Activists at the event called for a more nuanced conversation about drug use and criticized the societal demonization of users.
"Users are very demonised. There is no understanding of how they get there, but there is no safety net to help them," said one participant.
"It's a topic that we really don't talk about in the right way. It would be better to change it, even in small steps," added another young person at the event.
"We have targeted the addictions of our political, economic and cultural elites... power, public money, obscene language, pornography, alcohol, real estate, luxury, propaganda..." said Ferenc Somody.
The police had banned the planned event, citing an amendment made to Hungary's Fundamental Law which tightened child protection policies and drug security.
