On Wednesday evening, the Dáil witnessed significant protests and a full chamber as it voted on Sinn Féin's bill aimed at ending Ireland's involvement in the sale of Israeli war bonds. Despite large demonstrations outside, the Government indicated it would oppose the bill for legal reasons. Ultimately, the bill was defeated 87 to 75 votes. Opposition TDs protested vigorously, holding signs and chanting in disapproval, with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald condemning the decision as facilitating genocide. A notable dissent came from Independent TD Barry Heneghan, who stated it was a 'matter of conscience' to support the bill.
Shame on Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. They have just voted down Sinn Féin's Bill to stop the Irish Central Bank facilitating the sale of Israeli war bonds.
I'm voting for the bill because Ireland shouldn't facilitate the sale of bonds that help fund the devastation in Gaza.
