"Scotland's former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she thinks Harry Potter author JK Rowling feels "animosity" towards her, but said it doesn't go both ways."
""I didn't properly engage," she said, adding: "When I realised it had become as divisive and polarised as it had, I should have paused and seen if we could find a different way of achieving the same outcome.""
""I stand in solidarity with @ForWomenScot [For Women Scotland] and all women protesting and speaking outside the Scottish parliament. #NoToSelfID,""
Nicola Sturgeon believes JK Rowling feels "animosity" toward her but says the feeling is not mutual. Sturgeon has consistently supported trans rights and pushed for reform of gender recognition laws, first committing to reform before the 2016 Scottish election and seeing the bill passed in December 2022. Sturgeon said the legislation would make trans people's lives "that little bit better and easier." She acknowledged she "didn't properly engage" as public debate grew divisive and said she should have paused to seek alternative ways to achieve the same outcome. JK Rowling publicly criticised Sturgeon and the reform bill.
