New poll suggests public back peers in voting down assisted dying bill
"At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it."
"The move comes despite the Bill's sponsor in the Lords, Labour peer Lord Falconer, warning it would be wrong for the unelected upper chamber to overrule the will of the democratically elected chamber. In an interview with the BBC, Lord Falconer was asked whether the role of the Lords was to "ultimately uphold something that the directly elected members of the Commons have decided to go ahead with". He replied "That's correct"."
The Independent highlights coverage of major issues including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech and seeks donations to fund on-the-ground journalism. The outlet investigates topics such as Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC and produces documentaries like 'The A Word' which spotlight American women fighting for reproductive rights. The Independent does not use paywalls and asks supporters to help pay for free access. Members of the House of Lords are preparing to try to block Kim Leadbeater's assisted dying bill despite its narrow passage in the Commons. A Whitestone Insight poll of 2,071 adults found 70% of those expressing an opinion believe peers have the right to vote it down, while Lord Falconer warned overruling the Commons would be wrong and affirmed the Lords should ultimately uphold Commons decisions.
