Ministers give steer to 'Futureproof' Euston's HS2 station, newly released minutes reveal
"Quite what that futureproofing entails is not stated, but there has been talk in the past of building a station structure capable of accommodating enough platforms for a full HS2 railway, opening only the first six platforms needed to run trains to Birmingham. That would give the project the long-term option to extend the high-speed line further north as and when a decision is taken to do that."
"At the Board meeting, there was also a discussion of whether some of the expected housing developments could be brought forward in the near term rather than waiting until after the station is built. And on the other side of Euston station, there was talk about improving Eversholt Street, although at this stage it was a very high-level aspiration rather than a plan to action."
Meeting minutes from the Euston Partnership Board covering April to July 2025 were uploaded to the board's website just before Christmas. The April meeting confirmed ministers had given an in-principle steer to examine futureproofing the HS2 station at Euston in more detail. Proposals discussed include building a station structure capable of accommodating enough platforms for a full HS2 railway while initially opening only the six platforms required for Birmingham services, preserving the option to extend the high-speed line north later. Board members also discussed accelerating some expected housing developments and improving Eversholt Street. In May, an MVP design presentation was given for Underground upgrades.
