Met Police made 27 failings in 'homophobic' investigation of gay student's death
""best friend" and the "funniest, sweetest human being""
"'They focused on him being gay...'"
""The homophobia was there from the very beginning.""
Ed Cornes, a 19-year-old University College London student, was found dead in October 2021 in a King's Cross hotel basement room two days into term. He suffered 36 cuts and other injuries and high levels of GHB were detected in his bloodstream. He left his halls and met Matthew Butler, who took him to the hotel room where another man, Ian Casimir, was present. Butler and Casimir were arrested and later released without charge. The Met Police ruled out third-party involvement, apologised, and an internal review found 27 investigative failings; the family blames homophobia.
