Mahmood to scrap failed experiment' of police and crime commissioners
"Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"Police and crime commissioners (PCCS) across England and Wales are to be abolished in a bid to save tens of millions of pounds. Ministers have declared the roles to be a failed experiment that has cost too much money and which the public are mostly unaware of. First established in 2012 by Theresa May, these elected officials are currently responsible for setting police force budgets and appointing chief constables in their respective areas."
Police and crime commissioners across England and Wales will be abolished in 2028, with projected savings of at least £100 million redirected to neighbourhood policing. Ministers labelled the roles a failed experiment that cost too much and remained largely unknown to the public. The PCCs were created in 2012 by Theresa May to set police budgets and appoint chief constables. Their policing-arrangement duties will transfer to mayors and local council leaders. The change was confirmed in the House of Commons by policing minister Sarah Jones and announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The move aligns with the next scheduled PCC elections and aims to concentrate accountability at existing local leadership levels while reducing administrative costs.
