Mahmood to meet Trump's US security secretary for smuggling talks
""utterly unacceptable""
""protect our borders with our five eyes partners, hitting people smugglers hard""
""As the security threats we all face become more complex and span continents, we are stronger and safer together.""
Shabana Mahmood will meet US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and ministers from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada at a Five Eyes security meeting in London to tackle criminal smuggling gangs. The summit will also focus on online child sexual abuse and the spread of opioids. The talks come amid pressure to reduce Channel crossings in small boats, after 1,097 arrivals on Saturday and more than 30,000 arrivals this year, a 37% increase on last year. Mahmood described the total as "utterly unacceptable" and hopes to agree measures to protect borders and hit people smugglers hard. Mahmood was appointed home secretary days earlier, replacing Yvette Cooper. Noem oversees ICE and has played a key role in ramping up deportations.
