Mahmood set to slash number of forces in major police shake-up
"The changes will see the overall number of forces slashed from their current level of 43, and tasked with focusing on serious and organised crime along with complex investigations such as homicides. Police chiefs have been calling for 12 mega forces to save money and boost crime-fighting efforts. At the lower level, each town, city and borough will be formed into a local policing area with neighbourhood officers focused on local crime such as shoplifting and anti-social behaviour."
"At the weekend, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley called for sweeping reforms of the policing system, which he said needed to change quite dramatically. Speaking on Sky News' Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Sir Mark said policing reforms were overdue and described the current model as out of date for the challenges of today. Sir Mark called for a reduction in the 43 police forces in England and Wales, saying it would pave the way for greater investment in technology."
Plans will drastically cut police forces in England and Wales, reducing the current 43 to a smaller number of larger forces focused on serious and organised crime and complex investigations such as homicide. Local policing areas will cover towns, cities and boroughs with neighbourhood officers handling shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. Reforms aim to merge headquarters, management and back-office functions to save money and free resources for more officers. Ministers expect consolidation to even out performance differences and give smaller areas access to greater resources. Senior police leadership has called for sweeping change and investment in technology.
