Lucy Powell has criticized the sexist framing of the Labour deputy leadership race after claims that she and Bridget Phillipson are proxies for two men. The contest to replace Angela Rayner has prompted rumours that Andy Burnham or Keir Starmer supporters are influencing outcomes. Powell, MP for Manchester Central and former cabinet minister, lost her Commons leadership role in a reshuffle and leads Phillipson by 17 points in a LabourList survey. Powell rejected being a stalking horse for Burnham and warned against turning the contest into a shadow battle between men. Powell said she will avoid proposing an alternative budget during the contest and wants stronger communication to voters.
