London dominates England's social mobility league with top 20 places
Briefly

A new report by the Sutton Trust reveals the dramatic disparity in social mobility across England, showing all top 20 constituencies for mobility are in London. Using an 'opportunity index' based on six metrics, including academic achievements and income prospects, the report highlights that children from free school meal backgrounds have vastly different chances depending on their birthplace. In East Ham, children are significantly more likely to excel academically and achieve upward mobility compared to those in Newcastle upon Tyne Central, underscoring deep regional inequalities in children's life chances.
In the best-performing constituency, East Ham, children on free school meals have a 30 percentage point higher chance of achieving grade 5 in English and maths compared to the lowest-ranking area.
The report indicates that children from East Ham are three times more likely to complete a degree by age 22 than those from Newcastle Central and West.
This research highlights a stark contrast in children's life chances based on their geographic location, revealing a significant inequality of opportunity across England.
Nick Harrison, chief executive of the Sutton Trust, underscores that the life chances of disadvantaged young people remain heavily influenced by where they grow up.
