The Labour Party is preparing for leadership elections now that nominations are open, with a deadline of May 8. However, the Parliamentary Labour Party, led by Ged Nash, indicated strong support for Ivana Bacik, suggesting no other candidates will contest her leadership, which will end if she is not reelected by May 29. The party aims to unify and focus on its agenda for an equal and progressive Ireland amid a challenging political landscape. Concurrently, Roderic O'Gorman has been re-elected as leader of the Green Party, following significant election losses.
"Under our Party constitution the leader of the Party must be a member of Dáil Ãireann," Mr Nash said.
"Importantly, no TD will be putting themselves forward for the leadership contest," Mr Nash said.
"Given the Party rules, I think this development will effectively bring the leadership election process to a conclusion and the Party can now continue to focus on the task ahead of us," Mr Nash told members.
"On Wednesday, the General Secretary of the Labour Party was given approval to start the process of the leadership election and party members were notified."
