Angeliki Stogia, a Labour councillor for Whalley Range, has been selected as the Labour candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election on 26 February. The contest was prompted by the resignation of former MP Andrew Gwynne on health grounds. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham was denied permission to enter the contest a week earlier. Labour won the seat at the 2024 general election with a 13,000 majority. Stogia expressed enthusiasm about campaigning, described herself as a proud Mancunian who has walked the constituency streets, and emphasized unity and rejecting division. Anna Turley and Lucy Powell appeared in support.
