Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel demanded the Foreign Office disclose how many taxpayer-funded civil servants attended an Iranian embassy reception marking the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including their seniority and whether human-rights concerns were raised. She asked who authorised attendance and whether officials used the event to raise cases of British nationals detained in Iran. The dispute follows heightened scrutiny of Tehran’s record, with the Government estimating 12,000 to 20,000 protest-violence deaths by mid-January 2026, mostly civilians. Patel called the attendance “deeply inappropriate” and said Labour stonewalled questions.
"It is outrageous that officials attended an event celebrating the Iranian revolution just weeks after the regime slaughtered tens of thousands of brave protesters. "The least Labour could do is apologise and explain how this was allowed to happen. Instead, they have stonewalled our questions and tried to keep the facts hidden. As usual with Labour, they are running scared of scrutiny."
