Kneecap, an Irish-language rap group, has come under scrutiny for comments in a recently surfaced video that seem to endorse violence against politicians. In response to backlash from public figures including Kemi Badenoch and Keir Starmer, Kneecap issued an apology to the families of murdered MPs David Amess and Jo Cox. They claimed their words were taken out of context and emphasized they do not condone violence against anyone. The group insists their comments were misinterpreted amid their critique of international issues, particularly the situation in Gaza.
To the Amess and Cox families, we send our heartfelt apologies, we never intended to cause you hurt, they said in the 500-word statement.
Establishment figures, desperate to silence us, have combed through hundreds of hours of footage and interviews, extracting a handful of words from months or years ago to manufacture moral hysteria.
We do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always. It is never okay.
Keir Starmer's official spokesperson said on Monday the prime minister believed the comments were completely unacceptable and condemns them in the strongest possible terms.
