Keir Starmer's Labour Party is criticized after losing a byelection to Nigel Farage's Reform UK by just six votes, marking a significant setback. Labour MPs accuse the leadership of complacency, particularly regarding the campaign strategy in Runcorn and Helsby. Prominent concerns include Starmer's declining popularity post-general election and dissatisfaction among the electorate regarding public services and living standards. The defeat has reignited debates about party direction, with Farage declaring Reform as the main opposition party, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape.
I was quite shocked at how complacent the campaign was, especially in Runcorn but nationally as well. Everyone seemed convinced we were going to win by a reasonably comfortable margin.
People haven't felt the change we promised and they are fed up after 14 years of a hard time under the Tories. They will start looking for answers elsewhere.
The problem is that it's the stuff we've delivered that people hate. It's all very well for No 10 to say we've got to keep delivering.
It's a big moment in British politics; our victory is the smallest majority at a parliamentary byelection since the end of the second world war.
