"I would say, you know, judge me on what I do. I am really keen, I think it's really important for the chair of the EHRC to uphold the rights of everybody across all protected characteristics."
"I was concerned about women who had been harassed or sometimes lost their jobs for the expression of legally protected views at a point when there was a public debate about changing legislation."
"I think it's really important when we're looking at this issue around single-sex spaces, to make sure that you also protect the rights of trans people."
Mary-Ann Stephenson asked campaigners who objected to her appointment to judge her by her actions. She pledged to uphold the rights of everybody across all protected characteristics. The UK government overruled the women and equalities committee's objections to her suitability. Stephenson said open letters she signed opposing campus censorship and violence against campaigners were mischaracterised as anti-trans and instead reflected a commitment to human rights, including freedom of expression and association. She donated to Allison Bailey's 2022 campaign after Bailey was found unlawfully discriminated against for gender-critical views. Stephenson said she was concerned about women harassed or losing jobs for expressing legally protected views during debate on changing legislation. She acknowledged the need to build relationships with the LGBTQ+ sector and said single-sex space discussions must also protect trans people's rights. Several LGBTQ+ organisations raised objections to her prior statements.
