John Lydon Dismisses Bob Vylan's Glastonbury Chant as "Sad and Pointless"
"[It's] sad and pointless. That's just riding on the current wave of leftism, where you don't have to think anymore. You just react with the herd. Moo!"
"They should follow their own advice [as per their band name]."
"If you're advocating the death of another human being, then you have no cause whatsoever. You are my enemy from here on in for the rest of your mediocre existence. You shouldn't be talking like that, you shouldn't be making enemies of your fellow human beings. Other than that, maybe they need a bloody good kneecapping!"
Bob Vylan led Glastonbury attendees in chants of "death to the IDF" and "free, free Palestine", prompting a police investigation and visa revocations that prevented U.S. performances. John Lydon called the chant "sad and pointless" and criticized what he described as a herd-like leftist reaction that avoids independent thought. Lydon compared Kneecap's pro-Palestine stance unfavorably and reiterated opposition to advocating the death of others. Lydon shifted politically from his Sex Pistols anarchist days toward the right and supported Donald Trump in 2020. Lydon continues to front Public Image Ltd. and is actively touring.
