Cara Hunter received a pornographic deepfake video during her grandmother's 90th birthday in April 2022 while campaigning less than three weeks before Northern Ireland assembly elections. The clip depicted a woman whose face resembled hers performing sexual acts in a bedroom with American plugs. A stranger sent the clip through Facebook Messenger and it spread rapidly via WhatsApp and messages, triggering a flood of vitriolic responses and harassment from unknown people. The experience caused intense embarrassment, distress, and alarm as she sat surrounded by family and managed campaign duties. Deepfake pornography remained relatively unknown and unexpected at that time.
