The Home Office has decided not to use the Park Hotel in Diss to house asylum seekers following local protests and council opposition. The hotel had been providing accommodation for women and children; officials had proposed moving single men into the premises. South Norfolk Council said it was informed on Friday afternoon that the building would no longer be used as an asylum hotel, without a given reason. Council leader Daniel Elmer welcomed the decision but said the displaced women and children would now be moved elsewhere. The decision followed a High Court injunction in Epping and prompted consideration of legal action by other councils.
The Home Office thought it could just impose this change and that we would accept it,
But there is a right way of doing things and the decision by the Home Office was just plain wrong.
Although I welcome the decision, in reality it does mean that the women and children who we fought so hard to protect will now be moved elsewhere, and that is a shame.
