Healey says more military sites could house asylum seekers
"play our part"
"What you are seeing from Keir Starmer now is this isn't just a job for the Home Office, it's an all of government effort,"
"We've got (military) planners alongside the Home Office, we're looking at military and non-military sites for potential temporary accommodation"
The defence secretary said the government is considering relocating asylum seekers to military sites and other temporary locations as an alternative to hotels. Just over 32,000 asylum seekers are currently living in hotels while claims are processed, about a third in taxpayer-funded accommodation. Labour has pledged to stop housing asylum seekers in hotels before the next election following a summer of protests. Military planners are working with the Home Office to identify military and non-military sites for potential temporary accommodation. The new home secretary is expected to announce proposals to use military land within weeks. Two former bases, MDP Wethersfield and Napier Barracks, are already housing asylum seekers, with Wethersfield set to expand and Napier to remain open longer.
