Nearly 40 Labour MPs will not support proposals to remove the right to jury trials for offences likely to carry sentences under three years. The MPs argue limiting a fundamental right to achieve only a marginal reduction in the trial backlog would cause more problems than it solves. The MPs propose alternatives including increasing court sitting days, appointing more part-time judges as Recorders, and asking the Crown Prosecution Service to consider bringing some backlog cases on lower charges. The Justice Secretary introduced the measure following recommendations aimed at reducing court delays.
