"considered further representations from the chief executive and deputy leader that provided further evidence of how postponing the election would enable the council to release capacity to support the delivery of reorganisation"
"include the election to Pendle Borough Council in the legislation to postpone local elections"
"complete turnaround" by government figures "running around like headless chickens"
"It really is a shambles, and I think that the government ought to be thoroughly ashamed of the way that they've handled this and the position that we're in."
Seven Lancashire local authorities sought postponement of elections due to concerns about holding polls ahead of potential council abolitions and reorganisation. Pendle initially had its request denied, prompting criticism from Liberal Democrat leader David Whipp who described the decision as a "complete turnaround" and accused ministers of playing politics. The secretary of state, Steve Reed, accepted further representations that postponing would free capacity to support reorganisation and decided to include Pendle in the legislation to delay elections. Nationally, Reform UK has launched legal action to try to prevent the postponement, with a two-day hearing scheduled in February.
