Government misses target on new-build social homes by more than 1,400
Briefly

In 2024, local authorities and approved housing bodies added 10,595 social homes, comprising new builds, acquisitions, and leasing. However, the target for new-built homes was missed by 1,429 units, and leasing also fell short. Minister James Browne emphasized the need for local authorities to meet their targets and announced quarterly performance reports to track progress. Encouragingly, over 7,100 affordable home supports were delivered, surpassing the target of 6,400. The final quarter saw the bulk of this delivery, despite concerns about a decline in private building output affecting social housing.
Minister for Housing James Browne acknowledged the shortfall in new-build social homes, pledging that each local authority must strive to meet their targets for 2024.
The figures reveal that, while the Government’s target for new-build social homes was missed, the delivery of affordable homes surpassed expectations, with over 7,100 supports provided.
